It seems like it’s taken Richard Kelly forever to finish SOUTHLAND TALES, his follow-up to DONNIE DARKO. Whether it was because he ran out of money, or that the word around the campfire at early screenings really got to him. You see, apparently when it made it’s appearance at a few film fests last year, TALES blew donkey balls like no other- I mean, people were walking out of the theater, it sucked so bad.
But that may have been what Kelly needed to hear, as he went back to the editing room and began working the film over again. And now, according to his MYSPACE PAGE, it looks like he’s been given an extension by Sony for some additional effects shots, and then… the final product will be finished!
Although I’ve heard that it’s like watching paint dry, I’m still somewhat curious about TALES- I mean, it’s from the guy who gave use DONNIE DARKO, and stars The Rock, Seann William Scott, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as a porn star. What’s not to get excited about here? It’s looking like preview screenings will likely begin this summer, though no release date has been set. As the film is supposed to be set in ‘the future’ of Summer 2008, they better get crackin’, or ‘the future’ is gonna become ‘the past’!
