Variety reports this morning that Phoenix Pictures has just nabbed the film rights to the Charlie Huston vampire novel ALREADY DEAD, in conjuncture with Mike De Luca Productions. The two production companies plan to make a feature film out of the novel, which is the first of a 5 part book series, in hopes that this could be the next ‘hot’ franchise.
Normally I’d say they’re being pretentious with the franchise thoughts this soon, until I found out what the book is about: The series revolves around a vampire who happens to be a private detective hired by a New York socialite to track down her runaway daughter. The city’s vampires are afflicted with a virus that requires them to drink blood, and they run through the city in clans. A new virus that turns victims into carnivorous zombies threatens to upset the balance between humans and vampires.
Seeing as BLADE made it as a franchise (for awhile), and even UNDERWORLD was good for two movies, aspirations of this vampire epic featuring virus epidemics, clans in the New York underground, and zombies to boot being a franchise are actually pretty good.
