For some damned reason, is one of my favorite slasher movies to come out of the 80s. I mean, Jamie Lee Curtis… Leslie Nielsen(!)… disco dance floor… what’s not to love here? When we got word that Screen Gems was the damned thing a while back, I was dumbfounded. Why? What possible point would there be to a slasher classic like this? For today’s audiences, it’s just gonna feel like a rip off of (which, as those who’ve seen the original, know that PROM NIGHT is where the inspiration for the ‘creepy dude on the other end of the phone who eventually kills you’ comes from).
What I would’ve liked to say right about now is that Screen Gems has realized its idea was ridiculous, and called the whole thing off. Then I remembed that I’m totally f*cking hammered right now, and that would happen! is reporting, however, that Brittany Snow has been cast as the lead in the flick… aka… cast as the Jamie Lee Curtis character. Snow, who we last saw in JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE (and yes, I actually saw that movie…), is actually pretty damn hot and likeable in TUCKER, so if they’re gonna remake it, I suppose she’s as good as choice as any.
It’s times like these that I have to wonder what Jamie Lee is thinking. I mean, in just one year’s time, she’s essentially going to have 2 movies made after ones she starred in over 25 years ago, and 2 actresses essentially playing her. Trippy. Anyway, the Gems is looking at a February 1st release date, and I hope it bombs and lives up the usual February box office expectation. More on PROM NIGHT as we hear it!
