It’s been a long while since horror has owned the box office- I’d say we haven’t seen a number one spot since SAW III. So it’s nice to report that THE MESSENGERS took the top spot over the weekend, a hard feat to accomplish, as it’s main competition was the Super Bowl.
And as the whole damn movie cost about $17M to make, the flick’s pretty much already at the ‘profitable’ stage, and in the eyes of the studios- it’s a hit! Good news? Bad news? Good news in the fact that horror is still beating down the B.O. with a strong pulse here in 2007, bad news in the fact that we’ll likely see a crappy sequel to THE MESSENGERS here in the next couple of years. Meh.
It’ll be interesting if it sticks around the top 10 after this week (once word of mouth circulates), or if it’ll disappear like a flash in a pan. With HANNIBAL RISING hitting theaters this Friday, and Eddie Murphy in a fat suite… I’d say this is all the glory THE MESSENGERS will ever see.
Check below for the top ten numbers for the weekend, and be sure to catch The Arrow’s Review of THE MESSENGERS if you haven’t already.
1. The Messengers $ 14.5 Million
2. Because I Said So $ 13 Million
3. Epic Movie $ 8.2 Million
4. Night at the Museum $ 6.8 Million
5. Smokin’ Aces $ 6.3 Million
6. Stomp the Yard $ 4.2 Million

8. Pan’s Labyrinth $ 3.7 Million
9. The Pursuit of… $ 3.1 Million
10. The Queen $ 2.7 Million
