For many of you, this may just make your week. It was announced in the Hollywood Reporter this morning that Sega (you know, Se-Ga) has scored the video game rights to the ALIEN franchise from 20th Century Fox! Yup, a whole slew of new ALIEN games are about to be developed, and this here is one mofo that will be first in line to play em’!
Probably the coolest part of the new video games is that they’re not going to follow the guidelines of the movies, but they’re going to do their own thing, just following the history and the lore that the series is based on. So while you may not be seeing another ALIENS game anytime soon. you’ll most likely see a game based on some of the shite that went down directly before or after the events that took place.
Senior game producer Mike Gallo had this to say about what we can expect to see in the near future:
We’ll go out of our way to tie the games into the films in unique ways. We’re also looking at all ‘Alien’ source material for inspiration, in addition to the films. We may incorporate some characters that fans know and love, and we may let gamers find answers to questions that were left unanswered in the movies.
NICE! Maybe we’ll get to see what happened to Newt’s family, or maybe we’ll get a look at the first recorded attack by the Aliens in question. Either way, these games are aiming to kick all kinds of ass!
The only ‘downside’? The ALIEN VS PREDATOR franchise is still kept by Fox, and is not included in the deal. I say ‘downside’, because let’s face it- the movie sucked, and there’s been plenty of games on the matter already- so no HUGE loss at this point.
The first ALIEN game is expected to ship sometime 2008, so there’ll be awhile before any of this will see the light of day, but as they’re tapping Sigourney Weaver and Lance Hericksen to lend their voices to the new games, I have a feeling it’ll be worth the way!
