About a week ago, fellow horror feign Scott told you about the rumors flying around about Frank Darabont writing and possibly directing a film adaptation to Stephen King’s short story THE MIST. Prepare to get happy, as today Variety is reporting that Dimension Films has greenlit THE MIST, for Darabont to write and direct!
“It’s a project Stephen King and I have been talking about doing for almost 20 years now. In fact, it almost was my first directing project many years ago, but I went classy and did ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ instead. It’s time to get down and dirty and make a nasty little character-driven gut-punch horror movie.”
You’re damn right it’s time! This is very exciting news, as THE MIST may be one of King’s best short stories and Darabont has a proven track record of taking King and making something good out of it. With both THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE GREEN MILE being Oscar worthy, not to mention true adaptations, the idea of Darabont doing THE MIST may be the best news I’ve heard all year.
Darabont’s also no stranger to true and blue horror films either, as he wrote A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST. 3, THE BLOB and THE FLY 2 just to name a few. Thomas Jane is currently in talks to star in the flick, which centers on a group of patrons in a grocery store, as a thick mist covers the town… which just happens to be full of people eating monsters. Good times, good times!
Production is slated to start this spring, which will give you plenty of time to pick up King’s SKELETON CREW and read THE MIST, because yes… it’s that f*cking good.
