Punisher redux

DavisDVD got the scoop today on (gasp!) a double-dip DVD for one of my guilty pleasures in recent years in 2004’s THE PUNISHER, which was one of those films that drew reactions all across the board. Stories of the film being re-released to DVD in a recut form appeared a while back, but now we have proof that it indeed is coming.

Presented in anamorphic widescreen, with Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and DTS-ES 6.1 Surround, the film will feature over 17 minutes of additional material, including what happened to Eddie Jemison’s character, Mickey. Extras for the DVD include a new audio commentary with director Jonathan Hensleigh, a making-of featurette, THE PUNISHER Comic Book Gallery (featuring select past and present comic book covers), downloadable ringtones and digital comic books for cell phones.

As well, the set includes the “Animated Kuwait Deleted Scene”, which was originally slated to open the film. This scene was never shot, but has now been recreated in animated form and stars Thomas Jane and Russell Andrews. The best news for the set is the new artwork, which replaces the crappy original floating head syndrome cover with a nice embossed skull. Retail will be $19.98.
