The Horror Channel has heard rumblings regarding the 12th chapter to the FRIDAY THE 13TH series- mainly, who the director will be. Will they go with a vetern of the horror genre, or go with someone fresh to show us Jason Voorhees slicing and dicing up the 80s once again.
Strangely, it’s a little bit of both. Apparently Jonathan Liebesman, who disapointed most with DARKNESS FALLS, and who plans on wowing us all with TCM: THE BEGINNING, is in final negotiations to direct FRIDAY 12 for New Line Cinema. I say both because while he has a background in horror- he’s not really that well known. I can see the tagline now for PART 12: “From the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning…”. For that reason alone, from a marketing angle, the guy’s a perfect choice.
I can’t really say anything either way on this one. Since I haven’t seen THE BEGINNING yet, I can only judge based off of DARKNESS FALLS- which sucked due to a bad script and bad acting- but had some cool shots, and ‘looked’ really good. So we’ll just have to wait to see what Liebesman will do in the Camp Crystal Lake universe.
Of course, nothing’s ‘official’ as of yet- no press releases from the studios, no exclusive articles from Variety- just rumblings from those in the scene, and from those who really care.
