We all know that Rupert Wainwright has his own take on John Carpenter’s THE FOG, which rolls into theaters next month, but Fangoria found out what original director John Carpenter would have done if he remade it, and it’ll surprise you a bit.
Generally speaking, if a remake isn’t as close to the original in both concept and story, it’s seen as crap by most. But hear how Carpenter said he would have done THE FOG remake:
“I’d have put it in a big city, and make it an urban film. I had an idea once I could never figure out. I’d make [the ghosts] the innocent dead, and the people who were killed unfairly would come back and seek a little payback. There’d be a lot of stuff going on in the ghettos. But that would be a whole different movie, and it would also be much more serious.”
Sounds less like a remake, and more like a sequel- and I think it’s accurate to say that if Wainwright’s remake actually ended up being like that, there’d be a whole lot more hell to pay! I love the guy, but Carpenter’s idea is about as bad as it gets. Good thing that was just an idea he had, and it was never fleshed out.
