What do you get when you cross COPS with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD? You
get the hilarious award-winning independant short P.M.A.C.: WHEN ZOMBIES
ATTACK!! of course!
The brainchilds of effects wizards Matt Rose and Chad Waters, ZOMBIES is a spoof of reality T.V. with a paranormal clean-up crew (Post Mortem
Animation Control- P.M.A.C.) bustin’ down zombies left and right- much
like any trashy reality T.V. show you might find on the FOX Network.
The short was such a hit that they’re now planning a comic book series
based around P.M.A.C., with comic book artist Jim Mahfood (CLERKS) at
the helm, written by both Rose and Waters. Here’s what Mahfood had to
say on his latest gig:
“I’m excited and flattered that the WZA guys
approached me to draw the comic book,” Mahfood says. “Matt and Chad are
two extremely talented guys and they’ve successfully married two of my
favorite genres, horror and comedy, into one of the most clever and
unique ideas of the year. This whole project, from the show to the comic
to the other multi-media things they have planned are all going to kick
serious ass.”
The concept sounds funny as hell, but I’m not sure how it’s going to
translate into comic book form, as the reason why it was such a hit was
because of it’s spoofing humor of reality T.V.
But they’re getting lots of acclaim from big time directors, such as
Guillermo del Toro (HELLBOY) exclaiming “More than a
skillful satire of the reality-TV format, this is bizarro world COPS. As
if your cable service suddenly tapped into hell. P.M.A.C.: When Zombies
Attack!! is a true event! Two-fisted entertainment for gore-hounds with
an evil sense of humor.”
As well as Frank Darabont (THE GREEN MILE) raving that “WZA surpasses being skillful parody. It taps into the zombie
zeitgeist of Romero and becomes legitimate horror in its own right. It’s a
surprising, inventive and muscular blend of genres that leaves the
horror fan amused, appalled and wanting more.”
With this much enthusiasm for the short, you know the comic is probably
going to be as sweet as they’re hoping it’s going to be. Look for it this
July when it hit’s comic book stands in time for the Sand Diego Comic
