Get ready for some awesome Asian Horror titles heading to the North American shores in a few weeks. Tartan Video is releasing DOPPELGANGER and PHONE, as apart of their new label Asian Extreme.

DOPPELGANGER, from director Kiyoshi Kurosawa (CURE, SEANCE) is one of those tales of lost reality, identity theft and creepy identical twins. Here’s the synopsis:

Meek scientist Michio Hayasaki (Koji Yakusho) comes face to face with his own doppelgänger. He is initially able to ignore him, but the look-a-like becomes more and more insistent, until Hayasaki has no choice but to confront him.

Despite being physically identical, they are frighteningly opposite in nature – where Hayasaki is quiet and reserved, the new arrival is confident, aggressive … and unbound by social conventions. The two learn to co-exist until Hayasaki’s life suddenly leaps into a downward spiral.

Whoa. Dude, that is seriously f*cked up. The DVD includes: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround & DTS tracks, Anamorphic Widescreen, trailers, making of featurette, and an interview with the director.

PHONE, in the same vein as THE RING and DARK WATER, has the creepy stalker thing going for it. Check out the synopsis:

Investigative reporter Ji-won, who has recently published a controversial article about sex scandals, begins to receive a series of menacing calls. In an effort to escape the terrifying and relentless clanging of the telephone, she changes her number and moves to a new house. But the threatening campaign of terror continues unabated … the jangling of the phone fraying nerves and disrupting lives.

When a friend’s young daughter answers one of the calls, she begins to exhibit increasingly bizarre and abhorrent behavior as more and more people begin to die mysteriously. Ji-won struggles desperately to unravel the mystery to bring this cycle of death to an end.

And you thought your week was bad? PHONE was Korean’s top grossing film last year, and is currently being remade here in America through Maverick Films. The DVD will include: an Anamorphic Widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound & DTS tracks, with trailers, interviews and audio commentary by filmmakers.

If you’ve been resisting jumping on the Asian Horror bandwagon with everyone else, this is the time to give in and put out!
Both these flicks will give you all the bang you want out of your buck, and will both be hitting the DVD shelves January 25th.
