Now Playing Magazine had a chance to sit down and chat with write/director Paul Anderson, about some details concernign the DVDs of the entertainingly shitty RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE and ALIEN VS PREDATOR. Here’s an excerpt of what he had to say:
“I’m very into all of [the extra feature] stuff, I think it’s one of the great joys of DVD. You put so much effort in, and then just in the process of making the film you have to lose things, sometimes good things, as in the deleted stuff from Resident Evil 2. It’s good material but sometimes it just doesn’t work in the overall flow of the film because the sum of the parts isn’t always the whole. So it’s a joy to be able to include that stuff. For example, in AvP I’d originally written a different opening. It started in 1904, 100 years before the bulk of the movie takes place. And it was a really interesting opening and we’d spent quite a lot of money doing it, but then you looked at the whole film and you really thought it had too many openings because it was in space, then it was in Mexico, then it was in New Mexico, then it was on an ice waterfall. It just seemed like one too many, so we ended up taking it out. But looking at it on the branching DVD, I’m glad we got a chance to show that to the audience, because it’s something we really liked. So I’m a big fan of [DVD].”
Hmmmmm. And I thought the movie couldn’t of had a slower beginning… It’s good to know he’s giving ya more bang for your buck on his DVDs, and who knows, all this extra stuff might make these movies better than their theatrical versions.
