There are a few influencers of modern day horror that have inspired filmmakers for generations. Alfred Hitchcock’s PSYCHO and Bram Stroker’s DRACULA come to mind, as well as EC Comics’ TALES FROM THE CRYPT- the classic comic books of horror from the 1950s.
TALES FROM THE CRYPT: FROM COMIC BOOKS TO TELEVISION was just released on DVD this week- it’s an hour long documentary on the story behind one of the most notoriously gruesome comic books ever created. Their tales were horrifying, their stories of moral dilemas resolving in death and destruction were classic, and the Crypt Keeper was just plain funny!
They were one of the first scapegoats of the US Government (they were actually banned for de-moralizing the youth), yet they have gone on to inspire pop culture in ways no one could have foreseen. The documentary features George A. Romero, R.L. Stine, Joel Silver, and John Carpenter talking about how these tasty little comics influenced their careers (Let’s not forget Romero helmed CREEPSHOW).
I remember watching the Crypt Keeper on the surprisingly well done TALES FROM THE CRYPT HBO series, and having the pants scared off of me. Of course I was also laughing my ass off at all the death scenes (because these people really deserved it), and oogling at the bare tits and ass the show consistantly delivered. At just a half an hour, the show was a perfect fill of imagintave death, lots of blood, and horrors beyond my imagination (I was 10, give me a break).
