Universal Pictures is pumping the brakes on Fast & Furious 10 as they’ve announced that the release of the film has been pushed back by six weeks. The Fast & Furious sequel was originally slated to hit theaters on April 7, 2023, but has now been pushed to May 19, 2023.
The reason behind the delay wasn’t given, but Universal already had that date reserved for an “untitled event” film. The new release date for Fast & Furious 10 will find the film hitting theaters just weeks after the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and a week before the release of Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.
Justin Lin, who has directed more Fast & Furious movies than anyone, will return to helm both Fast & Furious 10 and 11, which he confirmed will tell one story spread across two films while speaking with Collider in September.
The idea of the last chapter being two films is correct. I have to say, I’m so glad — because I think when I first entered this franchise, a sequel was not a given. You had to earn it, you know? And so to be sitting here talking to you and go, ‘Oh yeah, there’s gonna be two more movies!’ I’m like, ‘Wow.’ It means a lot. So, every day when I wake up, I’m trying to reconfigure and make sure hopefully whatever we’re talking about process wise is gonna yield the best result. But I think having one chapter in two movies is correct. That’s where I sit today.
Even when the main Fast & Furious saga does come to an end with the final installment, Justin Lin hopes that it will still continue in the form of spin-offs or other projects. We already know that a sequel to Hobbs & Shaw is in the works and there have also been rumblings of a female-led spinoff as well, so it’s probably safe to say that we’ve got plenty of Fast & Furious left in the tank.
