Interviews: Creator Jessica Gao and director Kat Coiro talk She-Hulk: Attorney At Law

There has been so much revealed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the last decade that sometimes it is easy to lose sight of how many genres and styles have made their way into the comic book multiverse of entertainment. With the Disney+ series forging the MCU in new directions, there are still a few firsts that have yet to happen in the ongoing franchise of superhero entertainment. To date, we have not had a Hulk-centric project since Edward Norton starred in The Incredible Hulk. We also have not had a legal series, let alone a legal comedy series. There also has not been any official fourth-wall-breaking in the MCU. Now, we get all of those thanks to She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (check out our review here).

Starring Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, She-Hulk follows Bruce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters as she gains shape-shifting abilities similar to his. As she wrestles with her newfound powers, Jen must deal with everything from her family to dating and more. Plus, throw in a slew of MCU characters and you have the makings of a series unlike any yet to debut on Disney+.

I recently got the chance to sit down with the series creator and head writer Jessica Gao and director Kat Coiro to discuss the series. Gao, famous for penning the “Pickle Rick” episode of Rick & Morty, talked about bridging all of the various elements and plot threads from the MCU and combining them into this new series. She also talked about the challenges of being true to the characters while also making the show very funny. Coiro discussed her first foray into big-budget filmmaking and how hard it was to combine action and comedy and make it all work with so much CGI. Both of them also discussed the soon-to-be iconic post-credit scene from the first episode of the series. Check out the full interviews in the embed above.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premieres on August 18th on Disney+.
