Lauren LaVera has faced off with Art the Clown in Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, and will be returning for the upcoming Terrifier 4 – but while we wait for that movie to go into production, Screen Daily reports that The Coven, which handles international sales on those killer clown sequels, are staying in the LaVera business by representing the survival thriller Man or Bear. LaVera has the lead role in the film.
The Coven is presenting the project to potential buyers at the Cannes market.
What is Man or Bear about?
Lovely, Dark and Deep director Teresa Sutherland will be at the helm of Man or Bear, working from a screenplay by Jaime Saginor. This is a feature expansion of the short film Black Creek Trail, which Saginor wrote and produced with ErinRose Widner. Joanne Rubino of Be Brave Media and David Clark of Mazo Partners are producing the feature.
The story centers on Alex (LaVera), a solo female backpacker who encounters an overly friendly male hiker traveling without gear who insists on tagging along. As his behavior becomes increasingly erratic, Alex is forced to battle her own intuition and a deadly wilderness predator in a desperate fight for survival.
As Screen Daily notes, “the project taps into the viral thought experiment that originated on TikTok and asks women whether they would rather be alone in a forest with a man or a bear.”
Saginor is taking on the supporting role of Francine. Production is scheduled to begin this summer.
What has been said about Man or Bear?
Saginor provided the following statement: “This project was created after I had a terrifying solo backpacking experience […] At heart, this psychological thriller explores intuition, and why a woman might be so quick to abandon hers, even when her life is at stake.“
Rubino and Clark added, “We’ve spent the last two years meticulously expanding the team and turning this award-winning short into a feature-length psychological powerhouse, and Jaime’s voice has been the compass throughout.“
