Per Deadline, 20th Century Studios is developing a movie based on the Choose Your Own Adventure novels, with Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) set to direct and produce.
Choose Your Own Adventure
The Choose Your Own Adventure series launched in 1979 with The Cave of Time by Edward Packard. It featured a branching story that allowed the reader to decide where to take it and how it would end. The concept proved enormously successful, with 184 titles released in the main series between ’79 and ’98, selling over 250 million copies. I do recall reading one or two of these back in the day, but they were never quite my jam.
Plot details for the movie are being kept under wraps, but the script will be penned by Tim Bissell (Andor). The beauty of the concept is that almost anything could happen. But could the project be truly interactive? Black Mirror attempted this with Bandersnatch, as did Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt with Kimmy vs the Reverend. A little harder to pull off on the big screen, but it would be interesting.
The Mummy 4
Next up for Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett is The Mummy 4, which will feature the long-awaited reunion of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. John Hannah is also set to return as Jonathan, the treasure-hungry and less-than-trustworthy older brother of Weisz’s character.
The production is slated to start this fall in London and Morocco. It’s still too early to reveal any real details on The Mummy 4, but Radio Silence has teased that it will be “really, really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome.” Bettinelli-Olpin added that he doesn’t think “Brendan and Rachel are getting involved unless they love that script, and what they read, I think they really liked. And it’s a good script. It’s gonna be fun to make.“
Fraser also recently said that he’s been training to get back into Rick O’Connell shape, joking, “Please wish me luck. I’m doing my best to get this 57-year-old gear in shape.” The physical demands of the original films did quite a number on Fraser’s body, so I hope he’s taking it easier on himself this time around.
The sequel is currently slated for an October 15, 2027 release.
