It wouldn’t be Friday without a little release date shuffle, and Universal Pictures has swapped two of its biggest upcoming movies. The Mummy 4, which will feature the return of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, was slated for a May 19, 2028 release, but it’s been bumped up to October 15, 2027. The film’s old date wasn’t left hanging, as Joseph Kosinski’s Miami Vice ’85 is now occupying the May 19, 2028, date, which is a big move from its previous August 6, 2027 date.
The Mummy 4
Ready or Not 2 directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are set to helm The Mummy 4, with production slated to start this fall in London and Morocco. It’s still too early to reveal any real details on The Mummy 4, but the pair have teased that the sequel will be “really, really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome.” Bettinelli-Olpin added that he doesn’t think “Brendan and Rachel are getting involved unless they love that script, and what they read, I think they really liked. And it’s a good script. It’s gonna be fun to make.“
In addition to Fraser and Weisz, John Hannah will be returning as Jonathan, the treasure-hungry and less-than-trustworthy older brother of Weisz’s character. He appeared in the previous three Mummy movies alongside Fraser.
Miami Vice ’85
It was confirmed earlier this week that Austin Butler and Michael B. Jordan have officially signed on to play James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs.
As you might tell from the title, this confirms that, unlike Michael Mann’s 2006 movie, this version of Miami Vice will be a period piece. Production will kick off later this year, and Kosinski plans to shoot the film with IMAX cameras. Dan Gilroy is writing the script, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the original series executive-produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier draft of the screenplay.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s said that the movie “will explore the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami, inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the NBC television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.“
