Tom Cruise draws finger guns in three new posters for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger as the mysterious comedy gets a trailer date

Ever since Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger started making headlines, movie fans have wondered what the upcoming comedy starring Tom Cruise is about. While people close to the project have teased aspects of the film here and there, there’s nothing like an old-fashioned trailer to convey the tone and tenor of a new film project. Thankfully, three new Digger posters debuted on Tuesday (shown below), which also reveal the date of the film’s first trailer. Mark your calendars for July 13, because that’s when the first extended look at Digger strikes it rich online.

In addition to today’s new Digger posters, a teaser trailer for Cruise’s upcoming film is tunneling around the internet. The teaser celebrates Cruise’s extensive filmmaking career, including films like A Few Good Men, Cocktail, Eyes Wide Shut, Jerry Maguire, Rain Man, Oblivion, Magnolia, and many more. The extensive retrospective culminates in a brief tease for Digger, featuring Cruise as an eccentric man with thinning hair, cowboy boots, and a toothy grin. Cruise’s character is bursting with energy as the promo teases another great performance from one of America’s most gifted actors.

I like the new posters a lot. The art takes a minimalist approach to promoting the film, with Cruise’s character, Digger Rockwell, shooting finger guns from his hips while striking an exaggerated pose. The posters are simple and clean, and the font choices are a chef’s kiss for poster design. Rockwell looks like he sleeps on a pile of money every night, and whoever designed his office chose retro/rustic vibes. I dig it.

Jesse Plemons teases Digger

Jesse Plemons has previously teased that the film is something of a modern-day Dr. Strangelove, which jives with what our Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, saw at this year’s CinemaCon. “It’s one of the strangest, funniest, most tragic scripts I’ve read,” Plemons said. “There’s a kind of modern-day Dr. Strangelove thing, and then it becomes something else entirely. Getting to see Tom just go for it — not in a death-defying action way but fully showing what an incredible actor he is — that was thrilling.”

Sandra Hüller on her excitement for Digger

“I am nearly bursting wanting to talk about this movie,” Hüller told THR‘s Scott Feinberg. “I can’t. I legally can’t. I can say that I saw a version [of it] that’s maybe not the final version, and that it impresses me beyond anything I’ve ever seen. And that’s all I can say. I think it’s going to be a remarkable film.”

In addition to Cruise, Digger also stars Sandra Hüller (Project Hail Mary), Jesse Plemons (Bugonia), John Goodman (The Connors), Riz Ahmed (The Phoenician Scheme), Michael Stuhlbarg (After the Hunt), Sophie Wilde (Babygirl), Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), Robert John Burke (Robocop 3), Burn Gorman (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), and Pip Torrens (Preacher).
