One of the coolest things to happen at Comic-Con this year was that, after twenty-five years of being a fan, I finally got to meet the entire Broken Lizard gang at the after-party for their latest movie, Super Troopers 3. I was able to interview the whole gang on the red carpet before popping into the party for—well—more than a few drinks, including an Old Fashioned that nodded to the infamous syrup-chugging gag from the first film.
I’ve been a huge fan of these guys ever since Super Troopers came out back in 2001. Like many, I missed the film in theaters but caught up with it on DVD, where it quickly became a favorite. It’s apparently one of the bestselling DVDs of its time, which led to a sequel and now a threequel. Not only is the whole gang back—including Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske—but Marisa Coughlan is returning, as is the one and only Brian Cox.
That’s right—despite having exploded in popularity in recent years thanks to Succession, Cox hasn’t forgotten his Broken Lizard pals and reprises his role as Captain O’Hagan. In our interviews, the guys talked about how keen he always is to have some fun with the gang. They also discussed how long they’ve been making these movies together, the enduring popularity of the series, and even teased potential sequels to two of their other classics, Club Dread and Beerfest. I had fun telling them how loaded I got at a beer-soaked screening of Beerfest as a young(er) man.
