Super Troopers 3 has brought the Broken Lizard gang back to the highway, and JoBlo has an exclusive look at some of the comedy that didn’t quite go according to plan. Super Troopers 3 reunites Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske as the Vermont State Troopers, and the movie finds the longtime friends and comedy partners getting into another round of ridiculous trouble. The new movie has already earned a 7/10 review from JoBlo, with reviewer Michael Conway calling it “a welcome return” and praising the chemistry between the Broken Lizard members.
The gag reel is a reminder that a big part of the Super Troopers movies’ appeal comes from the chemistry between the Broken Lizard crew. These guys have been performing together for decades, and that familiarity carries over to the screen. As Conway noted in his review, the insults, reactions, and little exchanges between the characters never feel forced. Even when a joke doesn’t completely land, there’s still something entertaining about watching the group bounce off one another. And apparently that chemistry can make it difficult to get through a scene without somebody losing it.
What is Super Troopers 3 about?
The troopers try to bring down a new drug ring, while Farva’s engagement to Thorny’s sister spirals into chaos.
Super Troopers 3 finds Farva (Kevin Heffernan) preparing to marry Sarita (Hannah Simone), Thorny’s younger sister. After Farva saves her from an accident, the two fall in love and become engaged, much to Thorny’s horror. Thorny (Jay Chandrasekhar) responds with a series of increasingly ridiculous schemes to break them up before the wedding. Meanwhile, the troopers investigate a powerful new drug called Canadian Crystal, leading them to a pair of suspicious wedding planners who may not have completely left their criminal past behind. The case isn’t especially deep, but it keeps the gang moving from one ridiculous situation to the next.
One of the biggest questions going into Super Troopers 3 was whether the movie would simply recycle the most familiar jokes from the original. According to Conway’s review, the third movie handles that nostalgia better than Super Troopers 2. There are callbacks, including “Who wants cream?”, another invitation for a mustache ride, and the inevitable “meow,” but the movie doesn’t stop every time it references something fans remember from the first film. Instead, Super Troopers 3 moves forward while allowing longtime fans to enjoy those callbacks.
Conway also praised the way the movie deals with the fact that these characters aren’t young troopers anymore. Thorny, Mac (Steve Lemme), Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske), Foster (Paul Soter), and Farva are older men whose bodies, relationships, and roles have changed, even though their maturity levels haven’t necessarily caught up with them. Farva gets more to do this time around, with his wedding becoming a major part of the story. Conway found that surprisingly effective, noting that the movie gives Farva’s relationship with Sarita enough weight to make him someone the audience can root for without turning him into a different character.

In addition to the core Broken Lizard crew, Brian Cox returns as Captain John O’Hagan, with Marisa Coughlan playing Ursula Hanson. Nat Faxon (Bad Teacher) joins the threequel as Captain Todd Markowski, with Chace Crawford (The Boys) playing Baker Buchanan, and Andrew Dismukes (The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy) as Coy Burns.
Jay Chandrasekhar is once again in the director’s chair for the sequel in addition to reprising his role as Thorny, with Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske returning to play Farva, Mac, Foster, and Rabbit, respectively.
