Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves did not have too high a bar to surpass, as the previous live-action feature adaptations of the popular board game were not able to live up its reputation. In the year 2000, the first big-screen version would get released by New Line Cinema (right before Lord of the Rings would get released) and flopped horribly. In 2005, it would get a follow-up in the form of a TV movie called Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God. When the Chris Pine incarnation was released in 2023, it garnered positive reviews, as well as a good reception, but it still did not do big business.
The Dungeon Master Speaks
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a fun take on the property thanks to the writing and direction of Game Night filmmakers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley. According to Deadline, Goldstein appeared at Comic-Con this week and revealed to ScreenRant that despite the first film’s underperformance at the box office, a sequel has been written. He explains,
We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons. We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”sponsored content
A New Live-Action Series
Although the IP hasn’t been a success as a movie franchise, an attempt at a TV show is also in development. Netflix has scooped up The Forgotten Realms, a live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series from Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine) and Drew Crevello (WeCrashed).
You may recall that the Dungeons & Dragons series was originally developed for Paramount+, which gave it an eight-episode, straight-to-series order in 2023. The project was originally overseen by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice), and Crevello later joined as executive producer and showrunner. However, it didn’t move forward and Hasbro Entertainment began the process of shopping the series elsewhere.
Crevello wrote the pilot for The Forgotten Realms and will serve as showrunner. He will also executive produce alongside Levy and Dan Levine through their 21 Laps Entertainment banner. It’s still early days, but it could launch a Dungeons & Dragons universe for Netflix.
