My first introduction to Gregg Araki was the outrageously insane The Doom Generation. The filmmaker has pushed the boundaries regarding sex and violence with a smirk, and it works. In his latest, I Want Your Sex, he brings back the old-fashioned ‘sex comedy’ but with a little heart. The film features an incredible performance from Olivia Wilde as a woman who hires a young man (played by Cooper Hoffman) as her “sexual muse.” It’s bawdy, wild, and it features fantastic supporting work from Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, Johnny Knoxville, Margaret Cho, and Charli XCX.
I recently sat down with Gregg Araki, Mason Gooding, Chase Sui Wonders, and Cooper Hoffman. It was a situation where you instantly feel comfortable walking into an interview room. The energy the four presented was palatable. Frankly, it’s not surprising considering the level of talent Araki always manages to gather for his projects. And after a twelve-year break, it’s great to see him back.
During our conversation, the crew talked about the wild and woolly on display throughout I Want Your Sex. The three actors talked about taking on such unique characters. As for Cooper, he opened up about working so closely with Olivia Wilde and finding a strong connection with his co-star. Araki talked about returning to the big screen. As well, the topic of sex and violence in film was brought to the table. Considering Mr. Araki offers an original take on both.
I Want Your Sex is currently playing in theatres.
