It’s been eight years since the release of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, but apparently, the sequel is still in the works. Zak Penn, who co-wrote the screenplay for the original movie alongside author Ernest Cline, told The Direct that he’s busy writing the script for Ready Player Two. “I’m working on it,” he said.
Ready Player Two
For some reason, I had it in my head that Ready Player One wasn’t a huge success, but it was. The film received largely positive reviews upon its release in 2018 and grossed $607 million worldwide on a $175 million budget. More than enough to warrant a sequel.
Cline announced in 2020 that a sequel was in the early stages of development based on his novel.
The plot description of the sequel novel reads: “Days after winning OASIS founder James Halliday’s contest, Wade Watts makes a discovery that changes everything. Hidden within Halliday’s vaults, waiting for his heir to find, lies a technological advancement that will once again change the world and make the OASIS a thousand times more wondrous—and addictive—than even Wade dreamed possible.“
Will Steven Spielberg Return to Direct?
Although Spielberg isn’t averse to directing sequels, it doesn’t look like he’ll be back at the helm for Ready Player Two. Two years ago, the legendary filmmaker confirmed that he’d serve as a producer on Ready Player Two but had no plans to direct the anticipated sequel.
Tye Sheridan is Ready to Come Back
Tye Sheridan, who starred as Wade Watts, has previously expressed a desire to return to the world of the OASIS.
“Recently like I’ve had people asking me questions about, you know, a Ready Player Two. You know, ‘Is there going to be a sequel?’ And I think everybody’s well aware that Ernie Cline is releasing Ready Player Two, the novel,” he said. “You know, but people keep asking me and I would love to have an answer for you and I think people, you know, will and can speculate all that want, but I don’t really know what the plan is yet. I have my fingers crossed and, of course, I think it’s great and I loved working on that film, so yeah, I hope, I hope we get to do another.“
Are you down for Ready Player Two? Or is this one film that doesn’t need a sequel?
