Ryan Hurst was originally set to star as Kratos in Prime Video’s God of War series, but fans weren’t entirely convinced when the first-look image was released. It wasn’t the greatest, with Kratos awkwardly leaning over as his son, Atreus (Callum Vinson), is about to fire an arrow. Although Hurst had to leave the role after suffering a gruesome injury, he has shared a new image of himself as Kratos, prompting many to reconsider their earlier doubts. The man got JACKED.

Ryan Hurst as Kratos

Even though it’s just a mirror selfie, it’s so much better than the official image Prime Video originally released. Hurst certainly put in the work, which makes his departure all the more unfortunate.

The God of War series will follow father and son, Kratos and Atreus, as “they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.

Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar GalacticaOutlander) serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer of God of War.

Hurst’s Injury

Hurst spent months in training to gain 40lbs of muscle, but during production, he tore his bicep while performing a stunt. He’s since undergone surgery and is currently in recovery, but he’s got a lengthy healing period ahead of him. Biceps surgeries typically require a four to six-month healing period, and getting back to full strength can take a year.

The production schedule obviously couldn’t be put on hold for that long, so Amazon chose to recast the role. Plus, given how physical the role is, it wasn’t deemed to be safe for Hurst to return any sooner. God of War had already been in production for several months, with four episodes reportedly completed. Those will need to be reshot.

Dave Bautista in Talks to Replace Hurst

Amazon is looking to find a new Kratos sooner rather than later, and it was recently reported that Dave Bautista was in talks to replace Hurst.
