Mutiny will officially debut in theaters tomorrow, but many have already seen the new Jason Statham film as it was accidentally leaked online earlier this week…by Amazon. And you can bet that Lionsgate is pissed.
Amazon Leaks Mutiny
On August 19, Amazon accidentally posted Mutiny on Prime Video, allowing subscribers to watch the movie for a matter of hours before it was finally taken down.
Lionsgate, which is distributing the film in U.S. theaters, is apparently “very unimpressed,” as are a number of other international buyers. Lionsgate spent millions acquiring and marketing Mutiny, but the accidental leak has led to the film being pirated across territories, which isn’t great.
“This is an unprecedented situation,” an international buyer told Deadline. “It’s a major f*ck-up. I’ve never been in this situation before. What’s clear is that this is a multimillion-dollar problem for Amazon and buyers will expect a check to be written to help resolve this.“
One person who worked on the project said, “What the hell? There are serious repercussions for distributors here.“
It remains to be seen how Amazon will respond, or what the company might do to make things right.
What’s Mutiny About?
The description reads: “After witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed (Jason Statham) boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his boss’ death only to discover an international conspiracy.“
Jean-François Richet (Plane) directs from a script by Lindsay Michel and J. P. Davis. In addition to Statham, the film also stars Annabelle Wallis (Malignant), Roland Møller (Skyscraper), Jason Wong (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Adrian Lester (The Sandman), and Arnas Fedaravicious (The White Lotus).
What We Thought
Our own Tyler Nichols recently reviewed the film, but wasn’t overly impressed.
“When the action hits, it hits hard, but it’s far too scant. And it doesn’t help that the non-boat stuff feels like a wraparound story that feels more tagged on than anything,” Nichols wrote. “The day that Statham finally hangs up his action boots will be a sad one so, even when they don’t work like Mutiny, I’ll still appreciate new outings while we get them.“
