Nicolas Cage refers to the MCU as becoming a “well-funded and glorified WWE”

Cage & Comics

Nicolas Cage is a big comic book fan. He named one of his sons Kal-El (the Kryptonian name of Superman). He was even famously supposed to play Superman for Tim Burton’s Superman Lives (which he got to somewhat realize in The Flash). He also portrayed the Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, in two films. And finally, he would portray the Ben Reilly Spider-Man in both animated and live-action form. Unfortunately, his Spider-Noir show would be canceled after one season due to low viewership (despite the positive reactions). Cage would remain in good spirits though. “For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man,” Cage said. “Onwards, upwards, inwards.“

Cage Match

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cage would be in attendance at Fan Expo Dallas, where he participated in a Q&A and had some choice words for the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Face/Off star would state,

It started out, in my view, terrific. Some of the early stories were marvelous. The way that they wove all the threads together and told the different character stories and backstories.”

Then, he continued to say,

Lately — I do say this with love — when I see these 50-plus and otherwise intelligent and remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight — let’s face it, it’s all cutting to the fight — it’s hard for me not to be reminded that the MCU is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE.”

Cage’s Favorite Spider-Man

As far as some of the early movies that he enjoyed, he didn’t say specifically which movies he was referring to. During press for Spider-Noir, he did reveal his favorite Spider-Man actor and it’s a bit of a dark horse pick.

“I thought Andrew Garfield was a really great Spider-Man,” Cage said. “I thought he did a terrific job. He’s a marvelous actor. For all the younger Peter Parker Spider-Men, he was the one that I thought was really quite something to watch. I would put Garfield as, in my view, the best Spider-Man in cinema.“
