A Martian comes to Earth in the new trailer for The Space Between Us

A space shuttle embarks on the first mission to colonize Mars, only to discover after takeoff that one of the astronauts is pregnant. Shortly after landing, she dies from complications while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet – never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield) – an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he's never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa, who eventually leads him to Earth. When I initially heard the story for THE SPACE BETWEEN US, I thought it would pave the way for an interesting fish-out-of-water film. It's disappointing to see each new trailer fail to capitalize on the interesting aspects of this story, like the effect of Earth's gravity, for example. Granted, I'm willing to concede that the film doesn’t really dig into those scientific aspects, but it feels like they're just giving every cheesy line from the film away in the trailer, and I'd rather give this movie the benefit of the doubt.

THE SPACE BETWEEN US opens in theaters on February 3, 2017.
