A new government policy makes for a controversial dinner in The Oath trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Everyone knows that bringing up sensitive talking points at family gatherings is a death trap. In fact, more often than not, and regardless of how careful you are with your words, there will always be someone there who disagrees with your views. As you know, those uncomfortable confrontations can spiral out of control rather quickly, leaving you with a bitter taste in your mouth, no matter how delicious that year's bird tastes on your tongue.

Today, Roadside Attractions has debuted a new trailer for THE OATH, an action comedy thriller directed and written by Ike Barinholtz that aims to take one holiday dinner into a violent, political Twilight Zone.

Here's the official synopsis for the upcoming film:

A controversial White House policy turns family member against family member in THE OATH, a savagely funny dark comedy about surviving life and Thanksgiving in the age of political tribalism. When Chris (Ike Barinholtz), a high-strung 24-hour progressive news junkie, and his more levelheaded wife Kai (Tiffany Haddish) learn that citizens are being asked to sign a loyalty oath to the President, their reaction is disbelief, followed by idealistic refusal.  But as the Thanksgiving deadline to sign approaches, the combination of sparring relatives, Chris’s own agitation and the unexpected arrival of two government agents (John Cho and Billy Magnussen) sends an already tense holiday dinner gathering completely off the rails.  As timely as it is outrageous, THE OATH is a gleefully wicked reinvention of the traditional holiday comedy for our divisive political times.

The awkward comedy also stars Tiffany Haddish (UNCLE DREW, NIGHT SCHOOL), John Cho (STAR TREK, HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE), Carrie Brownstein (TV's TRANSPARENT, THE HORSE WHISPERER), Billy Magnussen (GAME NIGHT, INTO THE WOODS), Meredith Hagner (HITS), Jon Barinholtz (DUMB AND DUMBER TO), Nora Dunn (PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, THREE KINGS), and Chris Ellis (THE ISLAND, APOLLO 13).

Produced by Sean McKittrick, Ray Mansfield, Ike Barinholtz, David Stassen, and Andrew Robinson, with executive production by Tiffany Haddish, Edward H. Hamm Jr. and Kristen Murtha, THE OATH will gather round the table beginning on Ocotober 12th.
