Abbie Cornish is nearly unrecognizable as Anna Nicole Smith in first-look photos

Pride Month might be over, but Abbie Cornish is still celebrating as Anna Nicole Smith in the first image from Thane Economou’s upcoming film Trust Me, I’m a Doctor. The movie stars Kal Penn as Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, Smith’s doctor,  who was charged with several felonies related to prescribing medications to the late model before she died in 2007. After a nine-week trial, Kapoor was cleared of any wrongdoing and acquitted of all charges. Economou’s new film tells Kapoor’s story.

Penn on Cornish playing Anna Nicole Smith

“She really embodied Anna Nicole in a very striking way,” Penn told Variety‘s Marc Malkin. “She was a completely different person. I briefly met Anna Nicole a handful of times way back when I was starting my career, and she was on a reality show. I never really had any conversations of any note with her but it definitely brought me back to that time. Abbie is excellent. She’s phenomenal in this role.”

Today’s image from Trust Me, I’m a Doctor shows Penn as Dr. Sandeep Kapoor and Cornish as Anna Nicole Smith, riding alongside one another at what is clearly a vibrant and colorful Pride parade. Cornish is leaning back over the trunk of a no-roof sports car, Pride flags clutched in her hands and beads resting on her chest. Bubbles, balloons, and bared teeth surround Smith and Kapoor, their smiles lighting up with celebration.

The movie, written and directed by Thane Economou, is based on Kapoor’s memoir of the same name. In addition to Penn and Cornish, Linda Hamilton plays Kapoor’s lawyer, Ellyn Garofalo, with Dhirendra, Dan Willmott, Al Sapienza, Elon Gold, Kathy Maloney, David Julian Hirsh, and Nico DeCastris leading the cast.

More on Cornish honoring Smith’s legacy

Speaking about Cornish, Penn says her portrayal of Anna Nicole Smith is respectful and definitely not a caricature. “I didn’t feel like it was an impersonation,” he says. “I felt like she brought all of the heart and the vulnerability and the complexity of Anne Nicole Smith. What made my job easier also is anytime you’re in scenes like that, and you know my character is sort of responding to the Anna character, and then Abbie just walks in as Anna, my job is immediately easier.”

Trust Me, I’m a Doctor opens in theaters on October 16, with plenty of eyes eager to see Kapoor and Smith’s story play out on the silver screen.
