It’s the end of the summer, and typically this is considered “dump week”, with studios burning off the movies they don’t expect to make much of an impact. In a sad example of where we stand at the box office nowadays, a $100 million Ridley Scott action flick, The Dog Stars, is now considered “dump-worthy” with it highly unlikely to make an impact whatsoever. That’s a shame, as I liked the Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley-led film, but it may not even break $10 million, which would make it one of the biggest bombs in recent memory. What went wrong? It’s hard to say, but it does feel like this kind of fare almost needs to be consigned to streaming, which is too bad as it’s so beautifully shot (by DP Erik Messerschmidt) that it looks great, with it even getting an IMAX release (expect them to dump it after this weekend).
There’s no doubt that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hold onto the top spot in week five, with it looking at a $20 million weekend, as it closes in on the highest-grossing domestic release status of all time — with it only about $70 million away from matching Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $936 million record.
The summer’s other big hit, The Odyssey, will likely hold on to second place with about $12 million, with it now Nolan’s biggest hit ever. Insidious: Out of the Further will be front-loaded and make about $10 million. The race for fourth place will be the interesting one, with Coyote vs. Acme and The Dog Stars both vying for it. The positive online buzz will likely give Coyote vs. Acme the edge, with it looking at about $8 million. It helps that the cast has been gamely promoting it — with our own interviews with the gang dropping tomorrow. The Dog Stars will make about $7 million in fifth place, which would be a truly terrible finish.
