I wonder what J.J. Abrams thinks of AVATAR. I mean, here’s a guy not too long ago hailed as the next cinematic wunderkind, achieving all kinds of success in both film and television, producing and directing such populist fare as MISSION IMPOSSIBLE (III and IV), STAR TREK, CLOVERFIELD, “Lost,” and much more. Then in walks Cameron and f*ckin’ H-bombs the shite out of the global box office, unleashing not only a revolutionary new medium, but turning that very medium into the second largest grossing picture in the history of film (behind his own, mind you). If you’re Abrams, where the hell do you go?
Well, the dude recently chopped it up with MTV and offered some scant if jovial news on the sequels to both COLVERFIELD and STAR TREK. Ya’ll diggin’ The Gorn?
No, not porn. Gorn! as entertaining as that STAR TREK XXX parody may have been (ahem, so I’ve heard), Abrams had a good laugh when explaining “The STAR TREK sequel is really all about the Gorn.” For those who don’t know, The Gorn is a green-skinned race of humanoids resembling giant lizards. “We just thought it’d be fun…to go Gorn” Abrams quipped.
Touché sir. Though I still think of porn instead of going eco-friendly “Green,” which I guess is what you’re getting at. Either way, I say it’s time to move on to some freakin’ sequel talk.
At the prospect of sequels to both CLOVERFIELD and STAR TREK, Abrams had this to say:
“Yes, we have some ideas about that…but it’s obviously in the very early stages so it’s not something that…we can point to.” (on STAR TREK sequel)
“We’re working on something with that right now and again, you know, it’s early stages.” (on CLOVERFIELD 2)
Wow. Just a geyser of updates there, ay? Oh well, at least the 2 flicks are still in the mix and on course to see the light sometime this decade.
More when we own it!
Hot Nichols (STAR TREK’s Rachel Nichols, that is!)
