Across the Spider-Verse reactions say it surpasses first

The first reactions to Marvel’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have climbed to the web that is Twitter and they are just as fantastic as Spidey fans could hope for. While praise has been slung onto the storytelling, humor and character development, it’s the visuals that have truly dazzled moviegoers and built the most hype, with viewers saying it somehow one-ups those of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

With early reactions such as this for Across the Spider-Verse, it’s looking to be on par with–if not above–Into the Spider-Verse in terms of quality. That movie has an astonishing 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a 93% audience score. It, too, stands as one of the best-reviewed movies on Letterboxd, ranking near works like Goodfellas, The Dark Knight and City of God. It would go on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, nabbing Sony Pictures Animation its first statue. Could Across the Spider-Verse be the first sequel since Toy Story 4 to win the award?

Such positive word of mouth for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will only help the movie’s box office performance. As of now, we have it projected to pull in upwards of $80 million on opening weekend, easily more than doubling its predecessor, which had a take of $35.4 million before going on to gross $375.5 million worldwide. Add to that that the trailer was the most-watched one for any movie coming out this summer, with around 150 million views, and we’re looking at some multiverse-sized buzz.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse slings to theaters on June 2nd. It will be followed up by Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse in 2024.
