Miles Morales is swinging back into theaters this June, bringing bags of cash along for the ride. According to analysts, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is tracking between $70 million and $80 million for its June 2-4 opening in the U.S. To put things into perspective, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened at $35.3M in mid-December 2018 and webbed up $190.2M domestic and $384.2M worldwide. While Spider-Man has a built-in fanbase, the hype for Into the Spider-Verse hit when word of mouth spread. Shortly after the original’s release, many fans said the animated film was the best Spider-Man movie, prompting scores of fans to check it out in theaters. The audience demographic for Spier-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is mixed, with less spillover from the MCU live-action audience than you’d think. Males under 25 make up most of the crowd, with the film appealing to multiple cultures. Typically, studios try to refrain from releasing a tentpole film the weekend after Memorial Day. The new animated film sees the return of Morales, played by Shameik Moore, and Gwen Stacy, played by Hailee Steinfeld, in another adventure spanning parallel universes. Peter Parker, played by Jake Johnson, also makes his return, and this entry will feature new characters like Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, played by Oscar Isaac, Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Punk, played by Daniel Kaluuya, and Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, played by Issa Rae.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are the film’s writers, alongside Dave Callaham. Lord, Miller, Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Christina Steinberg will pull producing duties for this installment. In addition, Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti, Aditya Sood, Rodney Rothman, Rebecca Karch, and Brian Bendis are on board as executive producers.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse opens in theaters on June 2, 2023, with its sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, opening on March 29, 2024.
