Action film Ruthless is on the way, described as “a female John Wick”

Last Updated on July 31, 2021

We've been seeing a surge of female action heroes lately (Rey in FORCE AWAKENS, Jyn Erso in ROGUE ONE, the upcoming WONDER WOMAN, CAPTAIN MARVEL, and TOMB RAIDER films), and I say that's a great thing. But a lot of these characters are either part of established franchises or are adapted from another medium. While female action heroes exist (HAYWIRE, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, the ALIEN series), they are admittedly few and far between, even to this day. So it's exciting to hear about a new action film coming out called RUTHERLESS that's been described as "a female JOHN WICK". Here's the plot synopsis, according to Deadline:

When a legendary retired assassin is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, she must return to the life she left behind and complete one final job in order to secure a future for her young daughter. There are twists along the way.

I like that little "oh by the way, twists happen" line at the end there. Meaning, she's almost certainly cured of the brain cancer by the end of the film. I'm pretty sure they want sequels.

Anyway, I think this sounds cool. And, honestly, it doesn't really sound much like JOHN WICK when it comes to the actual story (if anything, it's much closer to the plot of CRANK). Producers probably just used JOHN WICK as an example of how they're going to film the action (meaning hopefully less close-up/quick-cut/shaky-cam bullshit). So I'm excited for that alone. Frankly, if there's any film that should get the rip-off treatment from Hollywood, you could do much worse than the JOHN WICK series. Also, like I said before, it's cool to have more original female action heroes. Hopefully the film is good and we can see more in the future.
