It's time for another coming-of-age tale and THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL looks like it's not exactly playing things straight. Minnie Goetze (Bel Powley) is longing for love, acceptance and a sense of purpose in the world when she begins a complex love affair with her mother's (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, Monroe Rutherford (Alexander Skarsgard). What follows is a provocative account of one girl's sexual and artistic awakening wrapped in a surrealist package. Check out the trailer below!

There's something about a period piece that really lends itself to this type of story, and the animated moments definitely have me intrigued. Fortunately for us, it looks like THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL may actually be the real deal. Our review from Sundance (you can check it out here) paints a picture of a film that's earnest, colorful and carrying more weight than your usual "Young Adult" material. We'll see if this one finds its audience in 3 months' time.

THE DIARY OF A TEENAGE GIRL will be released on August 7, 2015.
