THE WAR OF THE WORLDS remake pics and info seem to be popping up all over the place these days. Now we’ve got some for you from a Brooklyn shoot this week. I haven’t given the project much thought because it’s another remake, but Dakota Fanning is cute as the dickens, and it’s obviously a given that uttering Spielberg and Cruise in relation to the same movie should cause spasms of delight similar to middle-aged women at a Michael Bolton concert. Not to mention we’ve been here before with MINORITY REPORT, and that was pretty good, so we should definitely reserve judgement until…Oh dammit, I can’t do this!
Mr. Spielberg? Mr. Cruise? Any chance you’re listening? Probably not, but I gotta put this out there anyway. You have so much power between the two of you. Spielberg, one of the most creative and respected names in Hollywood. Cruise, the man who can get any project done with that dazzling smile, yet has picked diverse and challenging projects anyway. So now you’re telling me that the best you guys can offer us is a remake of creative genius from the past?! C’mon. Bring us new projects. Push and tear the boundaries! Hell, make fluff, but new super fluffy fluff! You’re both in the prime of your power and should be taking risks, using your power to define what Hollywood should be, not the other way around.
Sure, milking the cash cow is a primary vocation in Hollywood. I’m not naive enough to deny that, but the artists in the system are what keep it great. Those who continually fight the odds to bring us works that engage, enlighten, and sometimes devour us. And you two are more than that – Artists With Power! You wield that rare ability to think up great new projects and make them happen. So what happened? I’m sure THE WAR OF THE WORLDS will be everything it’s supposed to be, but why do it at all? Deep down you’ve got to know you should do better. I really believe that.
