What’s the messiest relationship you’ve ever been in? Have you ever gotten together with someone who feels right in the moment, but the next day you realize you’ve created a situation that could change the course of your entire life? In Alice and Steve, Steve (Jemaine Clement) is 50, and he’s not getting any younger. He’s a successful stylist who pals around with his best friend Alice (Nicola Walker). They used to date, but that’s all in the past. One evening, while Steve is crashing at Alice’s after a funeral for their mutual friend, he reconnects with Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith), Alice’s 26-year-old daughter. Izzy’s just been through a harsh breakup, and Steve has kind eyes, a funny disposition, and they’re both a little drunk. One thing leads to another, and before you know it, it’s business time for Steve and Izzy. Let the games begin!
Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Clement, Walker, and Margalith about Alice and Steve, and the trio was more than happy to share their thoughts and feelings about this uncomfortably brilliant comedy series that had me screaming into pillows, then laughing my ass off as I watched it.
During our time together, Jemaine, Nicola, and Yali talk about the art of creating one of the most awkward dinner scenes ever captured on film, the most redeeming aspects of their respective characters, and how being the primary initiator of a challenging relationship feels powerful and unique.
We dropped our review for Alice and Steve last week. In my write-up, I said the “series is short, sweet, occasionally uncomfortable as all get out, and an engaging look at how complex relationships can push well-intentioned people over the edge. Through a thin veil of grim comedy, the series screams into the darkness, holding a megaphone, as the void swallows the cries of outrage. People are not perfect. Relationships are messy. I want the best for Alice, Steve, and Izzy, but it’s going to take a miracle and a lot of wine even to get the ball rolling.
Alice and Steve debuts today, June 8, 2026, on Hulu and Disney+. Be sure to check it out!
