Alicia Vikander says Tomb Raider sequel is in limbo

It’s been over four years since Alicia Vikander starred in the Tomb Raider reboot, but the sequel has been a long time coming.

The Tomb Raider sequel was originally set to be helmed by Ben Wheatley (Rebecca), but when production was delayed due to COVID-19, Wheatley departed and Lovecraft Country‘s Misha Green came on board to write and direct. Everything seemed ready to go, but Alicia Vikander recently told Entertainment Weekly that the project is currently in limbo.

With the MGM and Amazon buyout, I have no clue. Now it’s kind of politics. I think Misha and I have been ready, so it’s kind of in somebody else’s hands, to be honest.

The actress couldn’t spill any details about what Misha Green has cooked up for the Tomb Raider sequel, only to say that she’s “excited to show the world” and “I love what she’s done with Lovecraft Country.” The first Tomb Raider film put Lara Croft (Vikander) on a perilous journey to her father’s last-known destination as she hoped to solve the mystery of his disappearance. The film also starred Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu, and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Alicia Vikander can currently be seen starring in Irma Vep, an HBO miniseries written and directed by Olivier Assayas, based on his 1996 film of the same name. Vikander plays Mira, an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as Irma Vep in a remake of the French silent film serial Les Vampires. Set against the backdrop of a lurid crime thriller, Mira struggles as the distinctions between herself and the character she plays begin to blur and merge. The series premiered at the Canne Film Festival earlier this year and debuted on HBO last month.
