Better break out your old Magic 8 Ball because Deadline has reported that all signs are pointing to Jeff Wadlow (FANTASY ISLAND) helming a live-action feature film based around the popular toy for Blumhouse Productions and Mattel Films. Is this something audiences are actually clamouring for? Reply hazy, try again.

"As fans of Mattel and their iconic brands, we’re looking forward to bringing Magic 8 Ball, one of their most celebrated toys, to life, and playing against expectations in doing so," said Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse Productions. "We look forward to partnering with Mattel Films to put this project on the fast track to the big screen and create a memorable experience for moviegoers." In addition to directing the film, Jeff Wadlow will also pen the script with Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach. This project is far from Mattel's first film based upon their toy-brands, as they also have feature-films based upon Barbie, Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe, American Girl, and View Master in development. In a further statement, Robbie Brenner, head of Mattel Films, said:

Since the 1950s, Magic 8 Ball has inspired imagination, suspense and intrigue across generations. This iconic toy has a built-in connection with fans and untapped potential for storytelling. There are no partners better suited to tell the Magic 8 Ball story in collaboration with Mattel Films than Jeff Wadlow and Blumhouse Productions, whose unique approach to the thriller genre has captivated audiences worldwide and has gained widespread accolades.

This will mark Blumhouse's third film with Jeff Wadlow after TRUTH OR DARE and the upcoming FANTASY ISLAND film, which is said to be a darker take on the '70s TV series of the same name. Michael Pena (ANT-MAN AND THE WASP) plays Mr. Roarke is the new film which is slated for a February 28, 2020 release.
