AMERICAN PSYCHO: THE MUSICAL. Yes, it’s something we all got excited about back in February, when news first dropped in that the infamous novel by Bret Easton Ellis – and subsequent movie by Mary Harron – was set to make an unlikely journey to Broadway. Though we had not heard much on this front since last winter, it’s far from dead…

Playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Duncan Sheik – the team behind the Tony Award winning musical “Spring Awakening” – are the duo behind the venture, and both recently spoke about how grisly the thing will actually be. “There are murders, and they are on stage in full view of the audience,” Aguirre-Sacasa told the New York Post. “An ax and a chef’s knife will be used. I think there’s going to be a lot of blood.”

“Obviously, it’s not for the people who want to see ‘Elf,'” Duncan Sheik said.

Aguirre-Sacasa also pointed to a few scenes that fans of the Patrick Bateman’s insane exploits can expect to see on stage:

* Bateman lures business associate Paul Owen back to his Manhattan apartment. Bateman puts on a raincoat so his designer suit doesn’t get bloody and hacks up Owen with an ax.

* He bumps into “Tom Cruise” in the elevator of the Upper West Side building where they both live. Bateman refers to Cruise’s film “Cocktail” as “Bartender.” Cruise corrects him and points out that his nose is bleeding.

* Bateman and his yuppie friends compare business cards at a swanky Upper East Side restaurant. Noting his peers’ classier cards, Bateman becomes so jealous he finds it hard to breathe.

It’s going to be like SWEENEY TODD for the 21st Century!

No timetable has been set, but a full draft is expected by early next year.

Original AMERICAN PSYCHO star Reese Witherspoon is ready to belt one out!
