Deadline reports that Ana de Armas and Jennifer Connelly are in negotiations to star in Safe Houses, an espionage thriller series in the works for Apple. The show comes from Gideon Raff, who created Prisoners of War, the Israeli series which was adapted into Homeland.

What’s Safe Houses About?

Based on the novel by Dan Fesperman, Safe Houses will be an eight-episode series set “in the aftermath of the killing of a high-ranking CIA officer in Madrid. The show is centered on Sofia Jiménez (de Armas), a fugitive agent accused of the crime, and Ambassador Elizabeth Winthrop (Connelly), his widow, as they each investigate the murder from opposite sides, unraveling a vast conspiracy that could upend the balance of global power.

The show is a co-production between Apple Studios and Wiip. Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders) will direct the opening block of episodes, with Raff directing a few himself. In addition to developing the series with Mike Seid, Raff will also serve as an executive producer on the project alongside Alexandra Milchan, Paul Lee and David Flynn

It sounds intriguing, and if I’m being perfectly honest, they already had my attention with Ana de Armas and Jennifer Connelly in the same sentence.

Ana de Armas & Jennifer Connelly

Ana de Armas was most recently seen starring in Ballerina, the John Wick spin-off, but she has plenty of other big projects on her slate. One of those is Deeper, a project which has been in the works for a long time. Described as a supernatural thriller, it’s set to star Tom Cruise as a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a deep-sea mission to explore a recently discovered ocean trench, only to encounter a mysterious and dangerous force.

Cruise and de Armas were reportedly undergoing extensive diving training for the project, set to start production last summer, but Warner Bros. began to have second thoughts about the ballooning budget. The project has apparently been put on hold, either until they can agree on a new budget or the film finds a new home.

As for Connelly, she’s set to return for the second season of Dark Matter, Apple TV’s sci-fi series in which she stars alongside Joel Edgerton.
