Antonio Banderas has signed on to play Pablo Picasso in Spanish filmmaker Carlos Saura’s 33 DIAS (33 Days), about the famed artist’s emotional turmoil as he worked on the painting “Guernica,” which was his reaction to the destruction of the Basque town of Guernica in 1937 by the Nazi Luftwaffe during the Spanish Civil War.
‘Guernica’ is one of Picasso’s most renowned works and stands as a symbol for the casualties of war, particularly innocent civilians. It has been on tour many times and currently resides at Museo Reina Sofía, Queen Sofia Museum (The Sofia) in Spain.
The painting has been used to augment political messages all over the world and is seen in popular culture often, including a scene in Alfonso Cuaran’s CHILDREN OF MEN, as seen below.
The French and Spanish language-shoot begins next summer in Paris and Guernica and currently three time Academy Award winning cinematographer Vittorio Storaro (APOCALYPSE NOW) is being lured to the project.
