Apes & monsters set to Rampage buildings in adaptation of videogame

Damn, I’m certainly no gamer, but even I remember playing RAMPAGE as a kid!

And you know what…the game is being adapted to the big-screen.

That’s right y’all, according to THR, New Line has tapped NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET and FINAL DESTINATION producer John Rickard to oversee production on the film version of the classic 80s videogame. Word is Rickard will begin meeting with writers next week. The goal is apparently to turn the property into a GHOSTBUSTERS or INDEPENDENCE DAY tentpole, though that’s hardly New Line’s M.O. Still, the studio has faith in today’s technology, and that the adaptation will be a success.

The concept of the game revolves around a trio of mild-mannered humans who are mutated into a giant Godzilla-like lizard, a werewolf and a gorilla, respectively, and fight the military while destroying buildings. Players controlled the monsters and moved up levels when a city was destroyed.

Nice! Well, nostalgically nice, I suppose. I’m not usually one for videogame films, and I’m not saying I’d run out to see this one, but damn, it’s like busting a TECMO BOWL movie. Makes me feel like a kid again.
