Arcanum goes Gold Circle

Variety is reporting this morning that Gold Circle Films (behind SLITHER, among others) has picked up the film rights to Thomas Wheeler’s fantasy-adventure novel THE ARCANUM, and is currently looking for a director to take the project head on.

While I haven’t heard of ARCANUM before, I must say the story sounds pretty dope. Check it: set in 1919 [the story] follows the titular secret society comprising the era’s leading occult investigators — Arthur Conan Doyle, Harry Houdini, H.P. Lovecraft and Marie Laveau — as they battle demons descending on New York City, including a serial killer of angels.

Serial Killer Angels. Now that’s something you don’t hear about everyday! Sounds like it’s alongside THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN and VAN HELSING as far as tone and adventure-like tale with famous characters are concerned. Gold Circle is hoping this may develop into a great franchise, but first thing’s first: find a director, make it- then release it! They’re notorious for making a flick and holding onto it until the cows come home, hopefully they’ll move a little more quickly with this one.

Screenplay was written by Wheeler himself, so for all of you purists out there who love the novel, don’t worry- the assumption being the author of the novel won’t destroy the movie version with a bad adaptation. Stick around for more news on THE ARCANUM (like who signs up to direct) as we hear it!
