Legos

If you never played with Legos…well I feel sorry for you. Legos are still one of the best toys available for children that really encourages them to use their imagination and creativity. The toys inspire us over sized kids as well and Lego hopes to use some of that in their upcoming film LEGO: THE PIECE OF RESISTANCE.

The LEGO ReBrick Competition wants you to create a 15-30 second video that might end up being one of the scenes in the film. ReBrick is a user submitted site that is filled with (you guessed it) Lego creations. Here is a description of what they are looking for:

The fan-produced clips will relate to an exciting scene in the film, in which the citizens of the LEGO universe rally to prevent an unspeakable disaster. They do this by quickly disassembling the elements of their environments, brick by brick, and rebuilding them into fantastic and fun hybrid vehicles and tools—the stranger and more innovative, the better, like rocket/dragons or butterfly/speedboats—to take part in an epic battle.

The video must be made using only Lego blocks and you can’t use any licensed figurines so don’t try to put any STAR WARS or HARRY POTTER characters in it. Once your video is complete you can upload it to Youtube and bookmark it on the Building Challenge page at rebrick.com. They’ll narrow the submissions down to 25 finalists based on how many “likes” the video has earned from the members of ReBrick. The finalists will then be judged by a panel that includes writers/directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller before a final selection is made.

The Grand Prize includes a trip for two to Warner Bros. Studios in California with a VIP tour, meeting the directors of The Lego Movie, be part of a Lego build, an exclusive camera built by the Lego model shop, and a bunch of souvenirs from the movie’s set. There will also be prizes for second and third prize winners and as well as bi-weekly prizes during the contest’s six week run.

The challenge runs from March 25th through May 6th and winners will be announced on May 20th, 2013. You can take a look at the complete rules and details here.

The contest was announced with this new title treatment for The Lego Movie and it’s pretty much what you would expect:

Lego Logo

Synopsis:

The 3D computer animated adventure tells the story of Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average LEGO minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

You could argue that the only reason this movie (and contest) exists is to sell more toys and you wouldn’t be wrong. But I think The Lego Movie could be a lot fun especially when you consider how humorous the Lego video games are. Sure they’re childish but I’m positive some of them have made you chuckle at least once.

Staring Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Morgan Freeman, LEGO: THE PIECE OF RESISTANCE is in theaters February 7th, 2014.
