Ash Reinvents Dead

Over a year ago we got word that Sam Raimi and Co. were planning to remake their horror classic EVIL DEAD, which started an uproar, a riot, and in a few cities, nuclear war in protest.


Flash to today, star Bruce Campbell sat down with Penny BLoody Magazine to discuss, among other things, their plans on remaking DEAD, which won’t really be a remake at all, but more like a reimagining of sorts. I’ll just let the man explain:

I think we’re gonna do a remake. It’ll be a whole new story, though. It won’t be with Ash. It’ll be the evil book, and it’ll affect a whole new group of people in a different situation. More like a reinvention. A lot of people, they got really crabby on the Internet when they first heard that type of stuff. But, we would never do anything to insult them. The trick is to take that premise – and we think it’s a scary premise – and use some cool modern day FX… so we won’t have green garden hoses in the shots. We wanna make a flat out, scary-ass, un-rated horror film.


I’m all about scary-ass, un-rated horror flicks, and I feel a little bit better about the whole thing if they really do what Campbell says they’re going to do. Because really, having the same premise with different characters isn’t a remake or a reinvention or a reimagining- it’s called a sequel, and with today’s effects, they could probably do a killer job.


Then again, that’s the cool thing about the DEAD movies, the effects and feel were low budget, which somehow made the original that much more creepy. So who knows? Many want an Ash sequel, many don’t want a sequel at all, and really, after they first announced their plans, there’s been so many remakes made and planned to be remade that at this point our feelings for remakes are numb, it doesn’t seem that bad.
