Barbarella’s new man

Just the other day I mentioned that the cheesecake-filled sci-fi classic BARBARELLA was getting some kind of update or sequel or other fresh non-remake treatment. And now we know who’ll be directing the libidinous exploits of the titular interstellar agent: Peter Webber, whose HANNIBAL RISING chews up screens this week.

Obviously, seasoned producer Dino de Laurentiis saw something in Webber’s work to consider him a viable candidate for the new Barbarella, which Dino describes as a “female James Bond in space”. No casting has been announced yet, but Webber previously worked with buxom leading lady Scarlett Johansson on GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING, so maybe he can convince her to step into (and out of) the skintight attire once occupied by Jane Fonda.
