Regarding Nolan’s latest epic, Oppenheimer made $5.58M on Thursday, totaling $199.86M for the week.
Despite drowning in middling reviews, Meg 2: The Trench is swimming toward a $20M-$30M weekend gross. The shark-infested sequel gobbled up $3.2M at 3,400 locations, a lesser number than the original. The first film brought in $4M in previews before chomping down on a $16.6M Friday take and a $45.4M weekend debut. Finally, A24’s Talk to Me grabbed $1.2M in Thursday previews and could reach $15.8M for its first week in theaters.
During a Q2 earnings call this week, WB’s David Zaslav said Barbie is coming to Max in the fall. Addressing people on the other end of the horn, Zaslav doubled down on his belief that a long theatrical window is a way for the box office to recover from the pandemic slump. “We really believe in the motion picture window — let it play out … go into PVOD, take it through the windows that have worked forever [in the business],” he said. “When it goes on Max, it will have a good impact in the fall.”
Greta Gerwig directs Barbie from a screenplay she wrote with Noah Baumbach, based on Mattel’s rich history with the Barbie toy brand. The film’s producers are Oscar nominee David Heyman (Marriage Story, Gravity), Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Robbie Brenner, with Michael Sharp, Josey McNamara, Ynon Kreiz, Courtenay Valenti, Toby Emmerich, and Cate Adams serving as executive producers.
