Everyone’s favorite hitman is finally coming back! Of course, I’m talking about Bill Hader’s Barry, who’s up to his eyeballs in trouble when Barry Season 3 hits HBO. Speaking of Hader, he directed all the episodes in this new season of the Emmy-winning comedy series, which take up to a dark place for some solid laughs. The Barry Season 3 trailer contains sad faces, moral dilemmas, and uncertain futures. In other words, it’s everything you need to have a good time with Barry.

Here’s the official synopsis for Barry Season 3:

Desperate to leave his violent past behind in favor of his newfound passion, Barry (Hader) is attempting to untangle himself from the world of contract killing and fully immerse himself in acting. But getting out is messy. While Barry has eliminated many of the external factors that pushed him towards violence, he soon discovers they weren’t the only forces at play. What is it about his own psyche that led him to become a killer in the first place? Season three finds Barry and the other characters trying to make the right choice.

While speaking with Collider, Hader confirmed that Barry Season 4 has already been written. He also said that because they got so far ahead of the curve, they were able to retool Season 3 to include elements that tease the forthcoming season.

The third season of Barry will pick up from the cliffhanger of the last season, which found Gene (Henry Winkler) discovering that Barry was responsible for the death of his girlfriend Janice (Paula Newsome) in the first season. Bill Hader teased at a Television Critics Association’s virtual press tour that the third season, “more than anything, shows the ramifications of [Barry’s violence]. Even more bad things happen. Mostly bad.” Barry co-creator Alec Berg added, “What’s interesting: All of the wreckage of seasons one and two that Barry had to do to keep the plates spinning … all goes back to his decision to become an actor. I really enjoy the fact that everything that happens in the show is a consequence of Barry wanting a better life, and every bit of that better life he’s trying to achieve has led to all this chaos.” In addition to Bill Hader and Henry Winkler, Barry Season 3 will also feature the return of Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, and Sarah Burns.

Barry premieres on HBO on Sunday, April 24. The premiere and new episodes will be available simultaneously on HBO Max.
